In many parts of the world, women are regarded as weaker vessels and playing minor roles, most especially in leadership, technology and education. On the 8th of March every year, women all over the world are celebrated and are challenged to do more, The theme for this year’s international women’s day is #ChooseToChallenge. Celebrating women who are doing amazingly well in their various fields and challenging the status quo, stereotypes, gender based violence and an action call for women to do better by taking up leadership roles.

In honor of the #IWD2021. Bridge Connect Africa Initiative in Partnership with Jobberman organized an event on 10th March 2021 which took place at Sa’adu Zungur Auditorium Mambayya House, Gwammaja Kano, In alignment with the year’s theme #ChooseToChallenge, The goal of the program was to enlighten women and girls on success tips for career growth and the importance of soft skills. In attendance were influential and successful women In Kano state who are doing well in their various fields to inspire women and girls to do better and strive to be the best.

In line with Jobberman and Master Card Foundation whose goal is to upskill 5 million youths In five years, from 2020 to 2025 through soft skills. The major focus were Agriculture, Creative industry and Digital skills, The first session was an extensive  discussion in a panel session hosting, Hajiya Salamatu of  Women Farmers Association (WOFAN,) Mrs. Fatima Abdullahi,  founder Amneef Multipurpose Society and Hajiya Sanna, a software engineer and a lecturer in Bayero University Kano. The second session was a training on soft skills and its importance, covering areas like emotional intelligence, personal effectiveness and Effective communication, coping with conflict, seeking out opportunities, time management, CV and Cover letter writing.

The first speaker Hajiya Salamatu of WOFAN spoke on agriculture and the role women play in agricultural development, considered as a male dominated field. She spoke on the challenges from a personal perspective and how she overcame them, she further motivated young girls to explore agriculture as a career not minding the status quo. The second panelist Mrs. Fatima Abdullahi, Founder of Amneef Multipurpose Society, generally concerned with creativity, designing, decorating, and planning event etc. She talked about her field and the challenges, stressing the need to be determined in whatever field as determination is the bedrock of success. The third speaker Hajiya Sanna, a Software Engineer and a lecturer from Bayero University Kano spoke about the digital field and the roles women can play, according to her, it is rare to find women in the digital space, she emphasized on the need for women to embrace technology and build their skills, and the importance of education generally.

In attendance were CEO, founders and co-founders of reputable organizations in Kano state and religious leaders were also present at the event and over 700 youths attended.
